For Freedom’s Sake

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5

It is so easy to become bound by religion, and man-made tradition. One has to be vigilant, and careful to realize when that is happening. Jesus came and challenged the established religion  and culture of his time.

They were so focused on law, that they forgot the PURPOSE of the law, which was to liberate people from oppression. Jesus would heal people on the Sabbath, and they couldn’t see past him working on Sabbath (Matthew 12:10).Jesus pointed to the fact that we should do good for others on Sabbath. It’s a proven fact that when we do good for others our blood floods with endorphins, and give us a natural high. As the scripture says ” He who refreshes other, will himself be refreshed”( Proverbs 11:25).

Christ commanded us to love each other ( John 13:34-35), and in that we become perfect ( Matthew 5:43-48; 1 John 4:18; ). I know people always say “no one is perfect”, but there is a way to be perfect in God’s eyes, and that is through understanding God’s love, and showing it to everyone we meet. This love is found in 1st Corinthians 13.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails…. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

So our task is understanding what true love is, and living that out. Jesus stated the  golden rule ” Whatever you wish to be done for you… Do for others”

Jesus delivered us from condemnation ( Romans 8:1),  and the punishment of sin – which is  death. We are now able to worship God in freedom, and not fear. He condemned sin , but didn’t condemn us who live according to the Spirit , and ” the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Gal 5:22-23).

Jesus is lord over life, and that’s why we can’t lose. If our enemies kill us, we are present with God, if they persecute us, our reward grows in heaven( Matthew 5:11-12), and if they let us live, then we will proclaim the goodness of our God – that’s true freedom that no one can’t stop!
